Update 08/02/2021: Good news! Rain over the weekend has been sufficient to stop this particular bushfire threat. Aside from smoke damage to the house, and incidental damage associated with emergency services access, Paruna has suffered no significant loss or destruction. Karakamia remains safe and unaffected.

We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to those affected by the bushfires currently burning to the north east of Perth in Western Australia.

We are closely monitoring the fires and the impact they are having on Western Australia’s community, wildlife and land. All AWC staff are safe and accounted for, and have been evacuated where necessary.

Two AWC wildlife sanctuaries, Paruna and Karakamia have been under threat. At present, Karakamia appears to be safe while Paruna continues to be at risk due to the strong winds.

Firefighters established a fire-retardant containment line along the northern fire boundary that is close to Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary, and emergency services are active on the fire-front with multiple water bombing aircraft.

AWC’s fire management program ensures optimum preparation for events such as these, and the affected sanctuaries are as well prepared as possible to protect wildlife and infrastructure.

We extend our sympathies to all those who have suffered losses due to the fires and to those who have been emotionally impacted by the simultaneous challenges of Perth’s COVID-19 lockdown.

We acknowledge and thank WA’s firefighters and emergency services teams who are working hard across the state to contain the fire and protect Western Australia’s community, property and biodiversity.

We are continually assessing the situation and will provide an update again soon. In the meantime, we express our thanks for the messages of support, care and interest.
